We were commissioned to carry out electrical testing at a senior school in Surrey. It was clear almost immediately that there were complexities to the project.

Built in the 1960s, the school had seen its fair share of upgrades, changes and quick fixes over the years. This isn’t unusual for a school, especially one whose intake has increased from around 300 pupils to well over 1000. But the extensions and new additions came without plans or documentation. That made life rather tricky for the school maintenance team.

On inspection of the school, we discovered that distribution boards were scattered around the building with no clear layout drawing. Panels were tucked away in storerooms or above ceilings. No one was quite sure what fed what. There was a sense of confusion all round.

Unfazed by the problem, we set about finding solutions for the school team. From the moment we arrived, we worked closely with the maintenance team to locate every single board, even those that hadn’t seen daylight in years.

Importantly, we documented everything as we went. We wanted to make sure nothing was missed. We wanted to equip the school maintenance team with the information they were lacking previously.

Throughout the project, we kept communication clear and consistent. We took the school team through every step and highlighted any issues or potential hazards — in plain English, not jargon.
