Load Monitoring

If you are planning to add significant electrical demand to your installation, or investigating unexplained trips and failures, load monitoring gives you accurate data on what your system is actually doing. We install monitoring equipment across your key circuits and distribution boards and record continuous data over an agreed period, typically one to two weeks.

What is load monitoring and when do you need it?

Load monitoring records voltage, current, power, power factor and frequency across your electrical installation under real operating conditions. The data shows how much of your available capacity you are using, where peak demand occurs, whether loading is balanced across phases, and whether power quality issues such as harmonics or voltage fluctuations are affecting your equipment.

It is particularly useful before installing high-demand equipment: EV charging infrastructure, heat pumps and heat pump systems, additional server capacity, air handling systems, and battery storage. Rather than specifying an upgrade based on estimates, you can confirm whether your existing infrastructure has the headroom, or identify precisely what needs to change. It is also the right starting point when investigating recurring circuit breaker trips or unexplained equipment failures that standard testing has not resolved.

What our monitoring includes

We install calibrated monitoring equipment at the agreed measurement points with no disruption to your operations. The monitors record continuously across the agreed period, capturing your system under normal working conditions including any peak demand periods.

At the end of the monitoring period you receive a full data report with analysis: peak and average load profiles, phase balance assessment, power factor readings, and any power quality anomalies. Where the data indicates a constraint or a problem, we set out clearly what it means and what the options are.

Why Prolec

We design the programme around your question

If you need to know whether you have capacity for EV charging, we monitor the right circuits at the right times.

The analysis is plain and useful

We interpret the data in the context of your installation and your plans, and tell you what it means in practical terms.

We carry out the works too

If the data shows that upgrades are needed, we can design and deliver them.

FAQs

Straight answers to the most common questions about fixed wire testing for commercial properties.

Is load monitoring disruptive?

No. Monitoring equipment is clamped onto existing conductors and records passively. Your systems continue to operate normally throughout.

How long does monitoring take?

Typically one to two weeks, long enough to capture a full working cycle and any regular peak demand periods.

What does the report tell me?

It shows how your installation performs under actual operating conditions: peak demand, average load, phase balance, power factor, and any power quality issues. Where constraints are identified, we explain what they mean and what can be done.

Can monitoring confirm whether we have capacity for EV charging?

Yes. This is one of the most common reasons we carry out load monitoring. The data tells you whether your existing supply and distribution infrastructure can support the additional demand, and if not, what needs to change.
