Thermal Imaging

Every failing electrical component generates heat before it fails. A loose connection, an overloaded circuit, a corroded contact: each one runs hotter than it should, often long before it causes a problem. A thermal imaging survey can identify temperature changes while your system is operating under load, helping you identify potential problems before they lead to failure.

What is a thermal imaging survey and when do you need one?

A thermal imaging survey uses an infrared camera to detect heat variations across your electrical distribution equipment. Where temperatures are elevated or unusual, this can indicate issues such as increased resistance, loose or deteriorating connections, phase imbalance, overloaded circuit, or components beginning to fail.

The survey is conducted while your systems are operating under normal load. This is because faults are most visible when equipment is under stress. No shutdowns, no disruption. Thermal imaging can be a valuable addition to an electrical inspection and maintenance programme.

A thermal imaging survey does not replace an EICR. It complements it, helping to identify developing issues that may not be apparent during normal opperations.

What our survey includes

We work systematically through your electrical distribution equipment: main switch panels, distribution boards, sub-boards, consumer units, switchgear, motor control equipment, and cable terminations. We photograph every area surveyed, capturing both the thermal image and the corresponding standard photograph so the context of each finding is clear.

At the end of the survey you receive a full report with thermal and digital images for every finding, temperature measurements, an explanation of each fault identified, and clear recommendations for remedial action prioritised by severity.

Why Prolec

We survey under load

Thermal imaging is most useful when electrical equipment is operating under representative load. We plan the survey around your building’s operating conditions so the findings reflect how your installation is actually performing.

Our reports are clear and actionable

Every finding is photographed, explained, and prioritised. You receive a document you can act on, not just a set of images.

We understand what we are looking at

Our engineers know electrical distribution systems. When something is running hot, we can tell you what is likely causing it and what needs to happen next.

FAQs

Straight answers to the most common questions about our thermal imaging service.

Is thermal imaging a replacement for an EICR?

No. Thermal imaging identifies temperature anomalies in live electrical equipment. An EICR involves physical inspection and electrical testing of the fixed installation. The two complement each other: an EICR establishes the condition of the installation, and thermal imaging can help identify developing issues while equipment is operating under load.

When is the best time to carry out a thermal imaging survey?

When your systems are under normal or peak load. Faults generate the most heat under load, so a survey carried out when circuits are lightly loaded may miss developing problems. We schedule surveys to coincide with typical operating conditions wherever possible.

What equipment does the survey cover?

Main switch panels, distribution boards, sub-distribution boards, consumer units, switchgear, motor control equipment, and cable terminations. We work from source of supply through to final circuits wherever access allows.

How often should thermal imaging be done?

Annually is the standard for most commercial premises. Higher-risk installations, older equipment, or systems with a history of component failures benefit from more frequent surveys. Following significant electrical modifications, a thermal imaging survey is a sensible check.
