Fire Alarm Testing

Fire alarm systems need regular inspection and testing to help ensure they remain operational and faults are identified.

Prolec provides fire alarm testing and inspection for commercial premises across London and the South East as part of our wider electrical testing and compliance services.

Our experienced engineers work around your operational requirements, clearly document the testing carried out and report any faults or issues requiring attention.

What is fire alarm testing and when is it required?

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person to ensure relevant fire safety equipment and systems are subject to a suitable system of maintenance and kept in efficient working order and good repair.

BS 5839-1 provides recommendations for the inspection, testing and maintenance of fire detection and alarm systems in non-domestic premises.

Under the current BS 5839-1:2025 standard, periodic inspection and servicing should take place between five and seven months after the previous service visit, with the testing programme covering the relevant devices across the required period.

Routine weekly call-point testing is normally carried out by the building’s own team rather than an external contractor.

The exact requirements will depend on the fire alarm system and the premises, so the appropriate scope should always be established before work begins.

What our fire alarm testing includes

We provide agreed fire alarm testing and inspection for commercial premises, working with your team to understand the system, site and scope required.

Depending on the requirements, this can include:

  • Testing and inspection of agreed fire alarm system components
  •  Identification of faults or issues requiring attention
  • Clear records of the testing carried out
  • Practical recommendations on any next steps
  • Testing planned around the operational requirements of the site

Where further specialist servicing, certification or remedial work is required, we’ll make this clear and advise on the appropriate next steps.
